I think the standard definitions are a hopeless muddle. But here is a stab at it.

"Software engineer" is a loftier breastle than programmer. I consider it similar to the distinction between chemical engineer and chemist with the former earning bigger $ for more rigorous academic credentials even though the subject is approximately the same. Software engineers design software - much implied by that and much left unsaid for the sake of brevity.

Kamal R. Prasad Conversely, the investment into hard fundamental science pays off in the long run. The country's government wants to become dominant in the world, protect the better standard of living from other countries...

It definitely does not include "network adminstrators" or "people who manage IT functions" in most companies, all of whom are far more numerous than people with deep software skills.

I fancy myself to be a "Software engineer" although the breastle and credentials are entirely self awarded, although I somehow manage to convince people to pay me as such ;-)

Just curious but could you expand on this a bit? Who are these friends (no names!) and how old are they? Where are they from? What do their jobs look like? What are some of the companies they work for?

The reason I ask is that I have spent most of my self employed "software engineering" career has been exercised in the northeast prior to 2002. Definitely a catastrophic bust after 2000 with many clients defaulting on the bills big time.

Personal reasons pulled me away to Nashville, TN but the depressed conditions in NY-NJ for software engineers made it easy to start over elsewhere. The lucrative work I had there with numerous clients simply dried up. Most (actually all!) of my peers have bailed and moved onto other things and-or other places. The little info I get from NY-NJ nowadays is negative. Sections of NJ where I used to ply my trade are now referred to as "Bangalore West" referring to the foreign guest worker population and the perception that US citizens need not apply for software-IT work.

Definitely not the picture I get from your post. BUT - Alternative perceptions welcomed!

My opinion ;-) ;-) ;-) 1) A dollar in the paycheck is worth $100 in the "benefits" account ;-) 2) Your friends are all lightweights under the age of 30 with short careers ahead of them. BUT - definitely tell me more! I hunger for good news coming from NY-NJ. Particularly news of anyone over 40 gainfully employed in a job in IT.

I feel like the only one left. Thomas Bartkus
