No...there is ZERO monitoring of anything in Indian private sector.

Whenever I see idiots being selected to represent dalit viewpoints in debates, I know that the organisers of the debate want a specific outcome. This was common during the 1990 mandal related debates.

I know of leading dalit intellectuals (Gail Omvedt for example) being refused opportunity to publish their more radical views.

On Sat, 28 Jan 2006, Kamal R. Prasad I have the notion that it might be worth it to re-read...

My own views were never published by Indian English newspapers when I wrote radical dalit viewpoints forefully to them.

This is the view of ALL dalits I know. What more proof do I need?

DID U READ THE OBITER DICTA? It surreptiously creates a Hindu Rastra. I have corresponded with the Jain author and he was very happy with my evangelism of the Jain cause because he sees the cause as relevant to all non-hindu religionists in India. Let me know if you need his contact details to verify authentic Jaina viewpoint on saffronisation of judiciary.

You always run into affirmative action. As a minority, cultural autonomy is also a major concern. Do not mix up things.

The Obiter dicta is not about affirmative action. It is about religious, social, cultural freedom from hindu hegemony in these areas.

Peaceful elections...my foot. I acknowledge that the election-time subversion has reduced. But your number of 99.99 is inaccurate and has no basis in reality. The patterns of economic dependency and the threat of intensive post-election violence (of which there are multiple examples accross India) and deprival are no less violent than election-time violence. The democratic buttertion of dalits is the cause of the increase in atrocities as dalits challenge the power of the entrenched elite.

Of course the bigger issue is the lack of awakening, the investment on dalit education continues to be lower than it needs to be. The structural barriers to dalit awakening are well known and much spoken about but the situation has not improved too much, because the entrenched upper caste elites subvert the money and the procedures to prevent dalits from rising in education and awakening. They use the threats of economic deprival and downright violence to keep dalits in subjugation and periodically carry out horrendous inhuman violent killings to scare and subdue the legitimate demands of those remaining alive.

The database of violence against dalits is broad and deep. The violence is no less deep than the violence of Jallianwala Baug, but the Indian media and popular culture does not treat it that way. The miseries of dalits are not treated by Indians like you as their own miseries. They are treated like the miseries of far-away non-Indians are treated, irrelevant to the daily life and not to be bothered about.

I never said this.

Then start supporting laws to capture the data which will enable correct measurements and make the discrimination visible. In the USA and UK, equal opportunity legislation ensures that such data is captured and is used to monitor the fairness of systems and procedures of private companies. But these systems and procedures are not currently sensitive to caste. If they are made sensitive, the data will come out quickly.

BTW, we need similar systems and procedures in India to expose the unfairness in Indian private sector.

This pattern of upper caste oligopolies is most clearly visible in the diamond industry where only a few castes of Gujratis are involved. There are too few empirical studies of Indian private sector. But the pattern is visible to the open eye and minds. n fact, I have seen similar statements already made on this very group by non-Indians too, indicating that they too have noticed the pattern. You need to open your eyes and your mind.

Still...that is no justification for calling them frivolous. You did not even know about them. It costs time and money to file a case. All caste related cases cannot be frivolous. I remember reading about two in detail and merely seeing a reference to the third. The two I read about were in universities and were well documented on the web itself. If you search you might still find them.

zach if you make progress on eliminating slavery then the economic costs will be difficult to handle. The rednecks who are talking of driving out all illegals haven't a clue of...

300 million dalits can manage their own affairs...if there is economic self-sufficiency and independence from non-dalits. Yet right from independence, dalits have NOT asked for a separate state. Dr. Ambedkars first speech in the consbreastuent buttembly in the following link is proof. The speech starts after the amendment suggested by barrister Jaykar.

Despite this kind of clear committment to India, non-dalits seek to paint dalits as anti-national when they seek help from USA and UK, because non-dalits stand to lose in social, economic and political power terms if dalits become economically self-sufficient independent of non-dalits.

She has posted the articles which was rejected on The said article mentions that she is posting it here, because "Hindu" (a newspaper) rejected it. I have posted all my views elaborately on soc.culture.indian over...

You mean the cheap and corrupt imitation of democracy that runs in India. No issue. Dalits are fighting the battle by your rules. But we will change the rules of the game as we educate, organise and agitate in democracy and markets.
