Hi Em, when I lived in NY at his hospital with rat bites.

Most of the time it was always children 5 and under because of the size factor.

I would avoid contagions if you have pets and of course the small child because it is too easy for them to get into, plus the rats mice tend to wander in your house to die and if you do not find the decaying carcbutt, it can cause other problems as your pets getting at the carcbutt or maggots and then flies that will also carry the bacteria.

I have found using fox urine powder and other substances that are harmless to your pets kids are pretty effective at making the mice run away.

If you can borrow a cat, which I am unable due to family allergies, it can be one of the best remedies of all.

I use this site for a lot of my pest animal issues.

I have to say we had a mega mouse issue like everyone in our neighborhood this year, but we put out live traps before and after we did the fox urine(Shake Away). Before we had several mice a day we were putting out into the forest, but now not one.

If you want to make sure that you just kill them not just chase them, you might want to get a Rat Zapper. Pretty effective and even though I adore animals, Rats for me are just too dangerous.

Oh if you see a squirrel in your house, don't panic. They aren't a carrier of rabies and I haven't seen them do damage to children or people. Easy enough to chase out :0

Good luck with getting rid of issue, and if you don't get rid of them think about moving or calling in the state and have them do it at the landlords expense.
