you've got to wonder sometimes. tori, i would give her her own kids' paper scissors, make sure she uses them positively & well so you & she can note correct use of the scissors...

I hate to say this, because I know how important crafts are, but you may have to give up some of that temporarily. Some children are just bigger challenges than others. I had to quit doing some of my needlework for a while when my kids were small, because I had such a hard time keeping one of them out of the sharp needles and scissors. To not go nuts, I started crocheting again -- heavy yarn and big crochet hooks, and a cutter for the yarn that wasn't scissors. It was a PIA, because I had been really enjoying the embroidery, but I needed a craft that I could pick up and put down quickly without worrying about forgetting to put it all completely away every time I had it out. I'm just not well enough organized and disciplined to trust myself to always, always, put it all away, even if I was just getting up to go to the bathroom.

I'm sorry you are feeling like you aren't getting support from your co-parent or your MIL. Even if just to placate THEM, it will probably be wise to better "kid proof" your house as you work on teaching your child to be around those things safely.

Since you plan on home schooling (and that will have to include use of scissors), I'd recommend getting a bin for the "dangerous" stuff, and only having it out when you can be right with her -- otherwise, it needs to be in a place she can't get to. That means even if you are just leaving the table to grab a cup of coffee, you will need to put the scissors up -- at least until she gets over her penchant for cutting her hair.

(Could be worse -- she could decide to cut yours or her dad's while you're napping. . . .)

-- Children won't care how much you know until they know how much you care
