Funny you should mention this. My son (who is now 4.5 yrs) was dry at night and during naps well before potty training even came onto our radar screen - so by the time he decided he wanted to be potty trained (at 2 yrs 9 mos, he woke up one day and insisted on wearing underwear, and that was our potty training experience, save a few accidents in the first week), it was a no brainer to leave the diapers off during sleeping time. We'd been using the same dry diaper over and over again for a while :)
HOWEVER - my daughter who is 2 yrs 8 mos, was only very rarely dry at night when I took the initiative last week to give potty training a good go. She was very interested in underwear, and had demonstrated all the signs of readiness EXCEPT having a strong desire to go for it full time. So last Monday after camp I took off her diaper and let her be bare bottomed. Monday and Tuesday she was bare bottomed at home except for two hours on Tuesday in a pull-up (ordinarily I am anti-pull-up but I used them for about three days) while we were at Little Gym (she used the potty there but also had a small "accident" in the pull-up), and when she fell asleep in the car, I put a pull-up on her Tuesday. I put one on her at bedtime Tuesday and naptime Wednesday - but at bedtime she would have no part of it. She flat out refused to wear one ever again. And interestingly, she wet the bed the first night she wore underwear to bed, but not since - it has been five whole nights!! She's been dry at naps too. Of course now I say this the floodgates will open, right? Haha.
