that's fair enough - partly because there's not really anything to DO in a shopping centre, unless you're shopping. so i guess i back that one. i send my kid to the shop for me (which is in a little shopping centre), but he doesn't hang around there or anything. he & the other kids spend a bit of time outside in the street (not ON the street!) & just messing around doing kid things. i do think kids need that sort of experience of not really doing anything, just playing, iyswim.

i was thinking while i was at the servo tonight & a carful of older teenagers pulled up, that it's mainly when kids are old enough to be genuinely independent that the likelihood of genuine trouble is naturally increased, NOT when they're 10-11-12. so i suppose i'm doubly mystified at what some parents feel is "dangerous" for their kids, when the real potential for danger is in the 17-ish to 25-ish age group. i think also, that age-appropriate independence prepares kids better for when they genuinely are independent (or independent-ish) later on. kylie
