If you're comparing WoW to other previous Blizzard games, WoW is more like Diablo 2 than the Warcraft RTS breastles. In fact, if you liked Diablo you'll probably love WoW.
Just like Diablo 2, World of Warcraft has the concept of loot drops, skill trees, and the combat is similar. Your main goal is to keep levelling your character higher and higher, and manage your loot (gold, gear, etc). There are missions like kill X monsters, rescue someone, collect X items, kill a boss monster, etc. But there are no campaigns like an RTS, nor is there any moving plot or cut-scene movies. You also don't control any "units" but your own character, and possibly a pet which is like Mercenaries in D2.
But unlike Diablo, you are not limited to 8 players per "game". In fact, each Character gets created on a single "realm" which holds about 5000 players at a time. The world is very large, and there are very few artificial boundaries that force you to zone (ie watch a loading screen).
Within the large world there are "Instanced" dungeons that you can zone into with a small group of teammates (usually 5) and this is even more like the multi-player Diablo experience.
An arena construct is available for PvP, but they are not very much like multi-player WC3 campaigns. They are more like the type of arenas you have in an FPS like Counterstrike... Kill the King, Capture the Flag, etc.
